Ms. Margaret Gordon is the Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project (WOEIP), a widely respected leader and Elder of the Environmental Justice movement in California and across the country. She is a lifetime community activist. She is a pioneer in Community Science for Environmental Justice, and was the Community representative on the California Goods Movement Action Plan task force. Gordon also served on the Port of Oakland Commission (2007-2012). In 2010 was a National Purpose Prize Winner.
In 2013 Gordon received the prestigious White House Champion of Change award for her dedication to increasing public engagement in science and science literacy. In 2019 Gordon joined the Citizen Science Associations Environmental Justice Practitioners' Working Group. In 2021, Gordon became a Board member of Aclima Advisory Board to guide the development of science and technology that supports emissions reductions, public health, and environmental justice policy for communities such as West Oakland. In 2022 Margaret was appointed to the BAAQMD Citizen Advisory Committee, member of the Oakland General Plan for community engagement, a body of community-based participatory research that has led to safer jobs, schools, and homes. In 2023 Margaret became a Community Scholar with the Dellums Institute UC Berkeley. Gordon’s expertise has earned her roles in a number of local and state advisory boards and steering committees, including the California Environmental Health Tracking Project in Alameda
