Tom Steyer is a business leader and philanthropist who believes we have a moral responsibility to ensure that every family shares the benefits of economic opportunity, education, and a healthy climate. With this responsibility in mind, Steyer and his wife have pledged to contribute most of their wealth to charitable causes during their lifetimes. In this vein, Steyer has lent his time and resources to a variety of policy efforts, from defeating Proposition 23, the oil industry’s response to California’s efforts to reduce pollution, to championing Proposition 39, which has put nearly a billion dollars into California schools and clean energy projects, saving millions of dollars in annual energy costs.
Steyer now serves as President of NextGen Climate, co-chair of Save Lives California, and co-CEO of Beneficial State Bank in Oakland. He and his wife founded this nonprofit community bank in 2007 to provide loans to people and small businesses shut out by the traditional banking system. By statute, the bank invests all profit back into the community.
